Social Issues Movie in ELA

Dear 6th Grade Puma Parent/Guardian,

To support our 6th-grade  Social Issues Book Club unit, we will be viewing the movie Remember the Titans during part of class time this Thursday and Friday. This PG-rated movie will provide students an opportunity to see how a team and a town divided by segregation and fear overcomes their greatest obstacles and becomes unified. The players, their coach, and town undergo an incredible transformation as they continue to stay united while the sounding towns continue to pass judgement and hate. Our students will be asked to demonstrate their understanding of the skills we have been studying: character traits, themes, power imbalance, social issues, and progression of change, which are demonstrated in their Social Issues books as well as in the movie.  Students will be asked to demonstrate this understanding in writing and by participating in thought-provoking classroom discussions. 

If you have any concerns regarding your child watching a PG movie, please contact your child’s ELA teacher by Thursday, December 19,  so we can provide an alternative assignment.

Social Studies News Week of: Dec. 16th

This week in Social Studies we'll be continuing our unit on Ancient Rome.  We just wrapped up our Julius Caesar Trial Simulation where each student played a role in putting Brutus on trial for the assassination of Julius Caesar.  Ask your student how the trial came out in their section! 

This week we'll have a few assignments due:

Due Tues: Ch. 7 Section 2 Assignment
Due Wed: 4 documents from "Reading Like a Historian"
Due Thurs: Ch. 7 Section 3 Assignment

Also just a reminder that grades are constantly updated in Infinite Campus--including PUMA Pride Grades in Following Class Expectations & Completing Assignments on time.  Be sure to check those grades frequently.

Book Fair

The Book Fair will be held in the 1-8 IMC from 3:45-7pm on Monday-Wednesday next week.  (Dec. 16-18). 

The free community book exchange will be happening in the 1-8 Cafeteria as well on Monday evening.  It is also the Square 1 art pick-up night, and the elementary concert.
